Abuja, Nigeria The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has suspended all ongoing construction projects in Lugbe, Karu, and Kubwa, three major residential areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), issuing a three-month ultimatum for developers to regularize building approvals or face sanctions.
In a statement released Sunday, the FHA mandated developers in the affected areas to submit critical documents including Letters of Allocation, Approved Building Plans, Payment Receipts, and proof of ownership to its headquarters in Asokoro, Abuja, beginning February 3, 2025. The agency halted all developments until compliance was verified, citing the need to enforce regulatory standards. The crackdown aims to curb unauthorized construction and ensure adherence to urban planning guidelines. “This suspension ensures all projects align with FHA regulations. Developers must submit documents for verification,” the agency stated. A special amnesty was also introduced for commercial property owners lacking permits, allowing them until May 3, 2025, to rectify documentation gaps without immediate penalties.
The move is part of the FHA’s intensified efforts to streamline real estate practices in Abuja’s fast-growing suburbs. Unregulated development has raised concerns over safety and infrastructure. The agency emphasized that the amnesty period offers a “final opportunity” for developers to align with legal frameworks.
