NCF Challenges Oyo State Government's Decision to Clear Forest Reserve for Estate Development

The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) has expressed strong opposition to the Oyo State government's decision to clear Agodi Phase 2 of the Ogunpa forest reserve for the development of an estate. Joseph Onoja, the Director-General of NCF, criticized the move during the foundation's annual general meeting in Lagos, emphasizing the crucial role of awareness in preserving Nigeria's diverse biodiversity.

Onoja highlighted the lack of understanding regarding the significance of nature and the country's rich biodiversity, leading to their exploitation. He specifically cited the ongoing clearing of the Ogunpa forest reserve in Ibadan as an example, stating that the action lacked justification.

The NCF director called for a reconsideration of the decision, emphasizing the importance of preserving such spaces, especially in a metropolitan area like Ibadan. He urged the Oyo State government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, to address the situation promptly.

Expressing concern about the potential consequences, Onoja warned that failure to halt the devastation could lead to severe flooding and landslides in the affected areas, posing a threat to the lives of the residents. He stressed the need to protect the environment for the mutual benefit of the community.

Onoja underscored the historical significance of the forest, emphasizing that it has served the community at large, whereas the proposed estate would only benefit a privileged few. He criticized the destruction of green spaces in urban settings, emphasizing that it is an unsustainable approach.

Reflecting on the recently concluded COP28, Onoja noted a key takeaway – the recognition of nature as a solution to climate change. He urged for the advancement of this understanding, emphasizing the need to allocate resources to preserve and harness the benefits of nature.
