Calls for Investigation into N5bn Dredging Contract by Lagos State Government

The Coalition of Concerned Lagosians has urged the Lagos State Government to investigate the recently awarded N5bn dredging and channelization contract from Mende to the Lagoon Waterfront. The coalition's plea was articulated in a statement released on Thursday, signed by both the national president, Nurudeen Olawale, and the secretary, Korede Animashaun.

The controversial contract, handed to a construction company, spans a project scope of 7 kilometers long, 40 meters wide, and 4 meters deep, intended to be completed over one year. Despite the state government's initial payment of N2.5bn for mobilization, the coalition reports minimal progress, noting the persistent presence of an inadequate dredger stationed under a bridge for six months with no significant work observed.

The group accused the contractors of prematurely claiming the completion of the work and of requesting the remaining N2.5bn. They also expressed concerns over potential procurement violations and corruption, potentially tarnishing the reputation of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration. To preempt any damage, they are calling the governor's attention to these discrepancies.

Further, the coalition performed preliminary checks using an eco sander to gauge water depth prior to the project's initiation, vowing to re-measure and publicly disclose their findings to validate the integrity of the completed work. They also appealed to the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to look into the allegations to uphold the credibility and mandate of the organization.

In their statement, the coalition indicated their willingness to collaborate with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), offering to provide any necessary information to support investigations into corruption or procedural violations related to the project. They also suggested that Governor Sanwo-Olu appoint a new team of consultants to oversee the project’s completion and ensure its successful execution without political interference.

Responding to the allegations, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Gbenga Omotosho, expressed surprise at the claims and acknowledged the need for further investigation. Richard Ntan, Secretary General of the Dredgers Association of Nigeria, noted that the contractors involved were not members of their association, limiting his capacity to comment on the situation.

The coalition’s statement emphasizes their commitment to transparency and accountability in government projects, particularly those involving substantial public funds and essential infrastructure development.
