The Federal Government has successfully mobilised more than N70 billion in private capital through Public-Private Partnerships to support the implementation of the Renewed Hope Housing Programme a flagship national initiative aimed at addressing Nigeria’s long-standing housing deficit.
This was revealed by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, during the opening ceremony of the 19th Africa International Housing Show (AIHS) in Abuja. In his keynote address, the Minister also launched a comprehensive state-by-state homeownership and housing development campaign as part of the government’s efforts to deliver affordable housing across the country.
According to a press release signed by Mark Chieshe, Special Assistant on Media & Strategy to the Minister, over N70 billion in private capital has so far been secured under Public-Private Partnerships to drive large-scale urban housing developments nationwide.
“Across Africa, millions of families still cannot afford decent homes even when they are available. This administration is not just building houses; we are fixing the structural and macroeconomic foundations that will make housing truly affordable and sustainable for Nigerians today and in the future,” Dangiwa stated.
Renewed Hope Programme Structure
The Minister outlined the three-tier structure of the Renewed Hope Housing Programme, which includes:
Renewed Hope Cities
Renewed Hope Estates
Renewed Hope Social Housing Estates
These developments are designed to serve as a national blueprint for delivering affordable, inclusive, and sustainable housing.
Expanding Access to Housing Finance
Dangiwa also highlighted the expanding product offerings of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), including:
The Rent-to-Own Scheme
The Rental Assistance Product
These products are tailored to reduce the housing burden for urban workers and young families. In addition, the upcoming MOFI Real Estate Investment Fund is expected to provide greater access to long-term, affordable mortgage financing across Nigeria.
Launch of State-by-State Housing Campaign
A significant highlight of the Minister’s speech was the unveiling of a new state-by-state housing campaign. This initiative aims to improve subnational implementation of federal housing policy by:
Embedding housing reform champions in state governments
Convening state-level housing roundtables
Providing direct support to structure viable housing projects and unlock local financing
The campaign is expected to enhance collaboration between federal agencies, state governments, private developers, and development partners to deliver context-specific housing solutions across the country.
Commitment to Inclusive Urban Development
Minister Dangiwa reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to urban renewal and slum upgrading, in alignment with international frameworks such as the UN-Habitat Global Action Plan and the Addis Declaration on Inclusive Urban Development.
“No one and no place is left behind,” he affirmed.
He also called for deeper collaboration among development finance institutions, donor agencies, and private investors, urging them to translate the insights shared at platforms like AIHS into tangible results on the ground.
“Housing is not a privilege. It is a right. When we invest in housing, we invest in people, jobs, cities, and our collective future,” the Minister concluded.
