Wike Pledges Water Supply and Infrastructure Upgrades for Zuba, Gwagwalada Communities

Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to tackle the long-standing water supply problem in Zuba while expanding infrastructure across Gwagwalada Area Council.

The commitment was made during a stakeholder visit to the council following the recent area council elections in Abuja. According to the minister, improving access to basic infrastructure in satellite communities remains a key priority for the FCT Administration.

Focus on Zuba’s Water Supply

One of the most immediate concerns raised during the visit was the lack of reliable potable water in Zuba. The fast-growing satellite town sits along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor and has become an important residential and commercial gateway to the capital.

Wike acknowledged the challenge and assured residents that the administration would intervene to address it. He stressed that access to clean water is a fundamental public service that should be available to all residents of the FCT.

Zuba’s population has expanded significantly in recent years as more people move to satellite towns where housing is more affordable than within the city centre.

Infrastructure Development in Gwagwalada

Beyond water supply, the minister also pledged broader infrastructure upgrades across communities in Gwagwalada Area Council. Planned interventions include improvements to local roads, bridges and other public infrastructure needed to support growing populations and economic activity.

For real estate stakeholders, infrastructure expansion in satellite towns often signals improved accessibility and increased property demand, especially in areas experiencing rapid urban growth.

Wike said the FCT Administration will work closely with the council’s new leadership to identify projects that can deliver the greatest impact for residents.

Partnership with Local Leadership

During the visit, the minister congratulated Chairman-elect Kasim Mohammed and commended residents for participating in the recent council elections. He pledged the administration’s support for the council’s development agenda.

Wike also advised local authorities to prioritise key development projects rather than attempting to address every infrastructure gap at once, noting that efficient project delivery is essential given limited resources.

Strengthening Traditional Institutions

In another development, the minister approved the upgrade of the Gbagyi traditional leadership in Gwagwalada West to a third-class chiefdom. The decision followed a request from community stakeholders and is part of efforts to strengthen traditional institutions across the FCT.

What It Means for Abuja’s Property Market

Satellite communities such as Zuba and Gwagwalada have become increasingly important to Abuja’s housing market as urban expansion pushes residential development beyond the city centre.

As infrastructure improves in these areas particularly water supply, road networks and public services—property values and development activity typically increase. For investors and homebuyers, this could position parts of Gwagwalada and surrounding communities as emerging real estate growth corridors.

Outlook

If the proposed water and infrastructure projects are successfully implemented, they could significantly improve living conditions in Zuba while supporting broader urban development across Gwagwalada.

For Abuja’s expanding real estate market, stronger infrastructure in satellite communities will remain a key factor shaping where future housing and commercial developments emerge.
