FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ATTRIBUTES ENVIROMENTAL ABUSE TO IGNORANCE

Dr. Ishaq Salako, the Minister of State for Environment, has highlighted that a significant portion of environmental degradation is a consequence of lack of awareness and understanding.

During a recent courtesy visit by a delegation from the Ogun State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in Abuja over the weekend, the minister emphasized that the optimal and sustainable utilization of the environment remains a foremost objective for the administration led by President Bola Tinubu.

He urged for a collective and determined approach to address the array of environmental challenges confronting the nation. Salako urged the NIPR to partner with the Federal Government in enlightening and reshaping public perspectives regarding the prudent and lasting utilization of the environment. He underscored the existence of numerous environmental issues like deforestation, encroachment of deserts, land deterioration, floods, gully erosion, and climate shifts in the country.

In light of these challenges, he pressed for immediate actions to reverse these unfavorable developments. According to Salako, the current administration envisions a future in which the responsible utilization of the environment becomes an essential civic duty. He further implored public relations professionals to assist the government in effectively educating the populace, especially on the proper management of waste.
Salako reiterated the government's determination to avert the prospect of Nigeria ranking among the top 10 countries afflicted by poverty stemming from disasters. He articulated, "The environment sustains livelihoods; without a conducive environment, survival is compromised. Therefore, for President Bola Tinubu, ensuring the sustainable utilization of Nigeria's environment is paramount, as the environment is a divine gift. If we mismanage it, we risk divine disapproval."

He elaborated on the multifaceted responsibilities of the Federal Ministry of Environment, outlining its primary objective of fostering a healthy and thriving environment for humans, flora, and fauna on Earth. Salako affirmed the ministry's unwavering commitment to this mission.

Salako acknowledged the instrumental role that the NIPR could play in this endeavor, as studies indicate that a significant portion of environmental misuse stems from a lack of knowledge. He emphasized the necessity for widespread awareness campaigns and educational initiatives to enhance environmental conditions.
