The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) recently conducted its 2023 Associates' induction ceremony in Lagos, where new members were urged to embrace integrity and professionalism as cornerstones of their careers.

He cautioned the new associates that their admission marked a call to service and encouraged them to actively support the institution and its leadership when required.

The induction ceremony's chairman, Dr. Michael Olawale-Cole, President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), echoed the importance of professionalism and integrity in the real estate industry. Addressing the theme, "Navigating Modern Real Estate Professional Practice: Expectations, Challenges, and Opportunities," guest speaker Adenrele Olowokure urged the new associates to live up to various expectations within the profession. These expectations include learning from supervisors, maintaining ethical conduct, and avoiding any form of undercutting. Olowokure, Managing Partner at A.F. Olowokure & Associates, advised the associates to explore diverse opportunities in the real estate industry, ranging from valuation services to dispute resolution.

In a separate development, the Lagos State Branch of NIESV received a call to explore investment opportunities in waterfront real estate, which was described as an untapped market. Mrs. Yetunde Olusegun, Director of Lagos State Acquisition, Revocation, and Compensation, Land Services Directorate, emphasized the potential rewards for stakeholders in advising the government on waterfront locations.

Olusegun highlighted various investment opportunities in waterfront areas, including recreation, hospitality and tourism, water transportation, luxury residential accommodations, and aquaculture. She encouraged estate surveyors to collaborate with landowning families, work with other stakeholders, and introduce innovative projects in waterfront locations.

While acknowledging the advantages of waterfront properties, such as high demand, serene environments, and high resale values, Olusegun also advised practitioners to be aware of associated risks, including flooding, severe weather, and expensive maintenance.

Chairman of the Outdoor Subcommittee of the Lagos Branch, Mrs. Olaide Faji, expressed that the lecture served as an eye-opener for practitioners, revealing previously overlooked opportunities in waterfront real estate. Gbenga Ismail, Chairman of the Lagos Branch of NIESV, emphasized the need for practitioners to explore and transform waterfront locations for the benefit of local communities. He encouraged members to take advantage of opportunities, offering advisory roles and translating them into investments for mutual benefit.
