Surveyors demand stronger enforcement to curb quackery

The Association of Private Practicing Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN), a subgroup of the Nigerian Institute of Surveyors, has emphasized the need for a unified approach to combat the widespread issue of quackery in the surveying profession through stricter enforcement.

During the 2024 annual professional workshop and luncheon themed “The Practice of Cadastral: Understanding the Technicalities, Ethics, Market Dynamics, Policies, Innovation/Reforms, Value-Added Services, and its Politics,” the surveyors called on their peers to uphold ethical standards. They encouraged the use of technology to promote sustainable, high-quality cadastral practices that deliver trustworthy services.

Olumide Adewebi, the guest lecturer and immediate past Vice President of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, urged practitioners to avoid unethical practices that could harm their reputation. He noted that surveying is a competitive field and advised professionals in the state to avoid undercutting prices and agent commissions, while also addressing the challenges facing cadastral practice to ensure long-term sustainability.
“There must be improved training, education, and regulations to tackle quackery, which is essential for the growth and profitability of cadastral practice in the state,” Adewebi said.

In his opening remarks, Ibikunle Adaranijo, Chairman of the Lagos branch of APPSN, highlighted the importance of educating surveyors on emerging trends and equipping them with the knowledge required for modern cadastral practice. He called for support from all stakeholders in eradicating quackery from the profession, reiterating the association’s commitment to this cause.
“We are relentless in our campaign against quackery, and we promote this message even through our weekly radio show on Radio Lagos. Our efforts are already producing results," Adaranijo said.

He added that the association is also prioritizing the fight against unethical practices. "Recently, some surveyors from the Office of the Surveyor General were suspended for one year due to unethical conduct and are now facing trial for their actions. We remain committed to continuously educating, training, and retraining our members to stay updated with the latest developments in the profession."
