Waste managers urge Sanwo-Olu to probe accumulated debts

The Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria Expresses Concern Over Delayed Visionscape Debt Payment

The Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWMN) has expressed deep concern over the prolonged delay in the payment of outstanding debts owed to its members by Visionscape, a waste management company. In a statement, the President of AWMN, Olugbenga Adebola, made a passionate appeal to the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, urging him to initiate an investigation into the challenges faced by waste managers in the state and to facilitate the prompt settlement of the outstanding debts.

Adebola stated, "The protracted delay in the payment of Visionscape Debt to our members, who diligently served under the directives of the previous government, is a matter of great concern. We, therefore, implore Mr. Governor, through the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), to take a keen interest in expediting this payment."

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of safeguarding members' businesses through legally binding agreements with the government, complete with appropriate stamp duty and necessary securities. Such measures, he argued, would enhance members' confidence and stimulate increased investment in the waste management industry.

Adebola also called for a comprehensive review of all remittances to the state government, taking into account the prevailing challenges posed by local and global inflationary pressures on businesses in Nigeria. He expressed hope that this review would provide much-needed relief to AWMN members grappling with economic uncertainties.

"We earnestly pray that the government ensures the sustainability of our members' operations and businesses, particularly in low and low-low-income areas, thus creating an environment conducive to profitability and bankability. It is imperative that Nigeria and Lagos State align with international models and best practices in waste management," he urged.

Meanwhile, Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by Dr. Omobolaji Gaji, the Permanent Secretary of Environmental Resources, acknowledged the significance of waste management as a top priority in the face of the region's continued population growth. He pledged the government's commitment to addressing these challenges and promoting sustainable development in Lagos State."
