'Tinubu tackling housing deficit' – FHA director

The Executive Director of Projects Implementation at the Federal Housing Authority, Oluremi Omowaiye, announced that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to building at least 50,000 houses across the 36 states of the federation within the next year to address the country's housing deficit.

Omowaiye made this statement at a retreat organized for the newly inaugurated executives of the All Progressives Congress, United Kingdom Chapter, held in Birmingham City. Presenting a paper titled ‘Tinubu’s Government is Tackling Housing Deficit,’ the former Osun State Commissioner for Works emphasized that Tinubu had directed the completion of these housing projects within one year.

A statement signed by Omowaiye and obtained by our correspondent in Osogbo read, “Mr. President has mandated us to build 50,000 affordable houses with flexible payment plans in the next year. The keywords are ‘affordability and long-term payment flexibility.’  “We are focusing on affordability and are taking measures to reduce the cost of building without compromising safety and standards,” Omowaiye added. He noted that the agency is diversifying heavily into clay brick building, which is commonly used in the UK for construction.

“Since clay is readily available in most parts of the country, we are diversifying into clay brick building to bring down construction costs. We are collaborating with academia on this. Our research unit in the Oyetunde Ojo-led Federal Housing Authority is working diligently on how to effectively use locally sourced materials for our housing projects,” he concluded.

Nigeria has a deficit of 28 million houses and will need N21 trillion to meet its housing needs, according to Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima in 2023.
