Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Offers Insight into Road Infrastructure Renewal and Upgrade

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has elucidated the rationale behind the recent renewal and upgrade of road infrastructure in the state, focusing particularly on the Eleko and Epe corridor, where the reconstruction of the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway was recently completed and commissioned.

The 18.75-kilometer rural road, stretching from Eleko to Epe T-junction, underwent a transformation from a two-lane roadway to a six-lane rigid concrete carriageway. This upgrade addresses the previous poor state of the road, attributed to a surge in average daily traffic volumes that led to delays and hardships for commuters.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, speaking at the expressway's commissioning, highlighted the benefits of the six-lane upgrade, including the installation of street lights and dedicated tracks for trailers. He emphasized that the transformation has resulted in stress-free commuting for motorists using this route.

Explaining the government's commitment to infrastructure investment that positively impacts residents' socio-economic well-being, Governor Sanwo-Olu recalled the critical condition of the expressway before the intervention. The upgrade aims to support the socio-economic growth of the Lekki-Epe corridor, positioning it as a burgeoning urban economic hub.

The governor expressed optimism that the reconstruction project would eliminate traffic gridlocks, significantly reduce travel time for commuters and businesses, and enhance socio-economic activities in the corridor. He clarified that the commissioning marked the completion of the first phase, with the second phase planned in two segments to ease funding and minimize traffic disruptions during construction.

The 18.6km first segment will extend from Eleko to Awoyaya, covering critical sections around Majek and Ogidan. The second 11km segment will commence from Ogidan to the Abraham Adesanya Roundabout.

Governor Sanwo-Olu's administration, since 2019, has prioritized road construction and rehabilitation as a cornerstone of its agenda, aligning with the governor's commitment to achieving a 'Greater Lagos' through comprehensive infrastructure development.

The Lekki axis, recognized as a major industrial and commercial hub, hosts key projects such as the Lekki Free Zone, Dangote Refinery, and Lekki Deep Seaport. The reconstruction of the Eti-Osa-Lekki-Epe Expressway is poised to enhance socio-economic activities in the area, providing investors with better value for their investments.

The strategic importance of the Eti Osa-Lekki-Epe corridor to the state's economic prosperity underscores the significance of completing the project, reinforcing Governor Sanwo-Olu's dedication to inclusive development. As development projects, including the Alaro City in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, continue to unfold, the Epe division of the state is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the new Lagos.

The accelerated pace of infrastructure development across Lagos State indicates a concerted effort to address the road infrastructural deficit, marking a positive shift from the erstwhile narrative of deteriorating and inadequate roads.
