COUNCIL EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY FOR HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has called on professionals in the housing industry to embrace technological advancements as a means to expedite the delivery of quality, affordable, and sustainable homes across the nation.

Addressing attendees at the 2023 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Workshop hosted by the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), Dr. Samson Opaluwah, Chairman of the council, emphasized the significance of integrating technology and innovative techniques to address Nigeria's critical housing needs. The implementation of technology is reshaping the landscape of the country's housing sector, bridging the gap between supply and demand, reducing costs, expanding access to funding, enhancing risk prediction methods, and streamlining real estate transactions, loan administration, and property inspections.

Presently, a range of technologies is being utilized in the housing sector, including 3D-printed houses, sustainable and recycled construction materials, construction robots, automation, the Internet of Things (IoT), Building Information Modeling (BIM), Augmented Reality (AR), and Virtual Reality (VR).

Opaluwah highlighted the essential nature of housing, emphasizing its role in human well-being. He stressed the importance of harnessing technology and innovation within the building industry to facilitate affordable housing supply in a sustainable manner.

The chairman underlined that technology holds the potential to revolutionize the housing sector, addressing challenges such as urban slums and suboptimal living conditions in rural areas. He advocated for utilizing technology to create more cost-effective and accessible housing options for Nigerians.

Opaluwah remarked, "By capitalizing on these advancements, we can construct high-quality, affordable, and sustainable homes that cater to the demands of our growing population."

Recent years have witnessed the emergence of innovative technologies reshaping the housing sector. Notably, prefabricated construction and system buildings have emerged as viable solutions, enabling developers to construct high-quality residences in significantly less time and at a reduced cost compared to traditional construction methods.
